Christmas is such a magical time of the year!
Growing up, my family read many Christmas stories to get us in the spirit.
This list includes some of those stories I grew up listening to as well as some extra favorites.
1. The Polar Express
Written by Chris Van Allsburg
This book is a must read each Christmas season! If you are unfamiliar with the storyline, it is about a boy who takes a magical train ride to the North Pole. There he meets Santa and is chosen to receive the first gift of Christmas.
2. How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Written by Dr. Suess
This is another fun classic that has such a beautiful storyline. The spirit of Christmas is so much more than the gifts that are given or received.
3. The Nutcracker
Written by Ernest Theodore Wilhelm Hoffmann
I know many families who have a tradition to watch the ballet performance of this storyline. It is a great book to ignite the magic of the season. You can cozy up by the fire and read this one instead of going out in the cold!
4. The Tale of Three Trees
Written by Angela Elwell Hunt
This story is more religious in nature and can be read during the Christmas or Easter season. The storyline tells of great dreams these three trees have but God has a different plan for them.
5. Merry Christmas, Curious George
Written by H. A. Rey
My toddler loves anything with monkeys so this was a fun one for us to find! Curious George helps the man in the yellow hat prepare for Christmas and even gets to meet Santa Claus.
6. Where Is Baby’s Christmas Present?
Written and illustrated by Karen Katz
I enjoy reading Karen Katz’s flap books to my toddler because they are so interactive! This one in particular shows baby looking for it’s Christmas gift and discovering other Christmas traditions as well.
7. The Little Match Girl
Written by Hans Christian Anderson
This was a story my family read during the holiday season while I was growing up. The author’s hope was to give a lesson about compassion instead of focusing on the receiving of gifts.
8. A Shepherd’s Gift
Written by Mary Calhoun
This book tells of a different perspective of the birth of baby Jesus. It is full of beautiful illustrations and an interesting storyline.
9. El Papa Noel
Written by Elena Gromaz Ballesteros
This cute book is full of short Christmas stories and is perfect for your 3-6 year old children. It is also appears to be exclusively in spanish.
10. Twas the Night Before Christmas
Written by Clement C Moore
I couldn’t forget the most classic book of the season!! This book is beautifully illustrated and very colorful as it tells the classic Christmas poem that is commonly read each Christmas.
